Hillary Clinton should refuse to turn up to the last televised debate against Donald Trump, according to David Axelrod, one of Barack Obama’s most senior advisers, the UK Express reports.
Mr. Axelrod, who was the chief mastermind behind the President’s election campaigns, said Mrs Clinton should reconsider attending the last scheduled debate after her Republican opponent claimed she was on drugs.
Mr Trump said Mrs Clinton appeared “pumped up” during their last clash and she should be tested for drugs before their next appearance on Wednesday.
Mr Axelrod, 61, took to social media to air his advice.
Tweeting to his 502, 0000 followers, he said: “Drug testing?!? You have to wonder if @HillaryClinton will/should reconsider next debate, given the depths to which this has sunk.”
The 70-year-old Republican nominee used a rally over the weekend to make the claims, telling his supporters: “I don’t know what’s going on with her, but at the beginning of her last debate, she was all pumped up at the beginning, and at the end it was like, “Oh, take me down”.”
The Clinton camp branded the comments “shameful attempts to undermine an election weeks before it happens.”
The business tycoon has repeatedly questioned his opponent’s “strength and stamina”, capitalising on her bout of pneumonia last month.
However, Democrats have pointed to Mr Trump’s audible sniffing through the two last debates.
The former Governor of Vermont, Howard Dean, who is a qualified doctor, said: “Notice Trump sniffing all the time. Coke user?”
The next debate will be chaired by Fox News journalist Chris Wallace.
When the channel asked Mr Trump’s vice presidential nominee Mike Pence for a response to the drugs claims he said: “All I know for sure is that Donald Trump is going to be ready for the debate Wednesday night.”
Mr Axelrod’s comments came as Mr Trump accused Mrs Clinton’s supporters of firebombing the Republican Party’s headquarters in Orange County, North Carolina.
The office, in the town of Hillsborough, was set on fire when thugs launched a bottle of flammable liquid through the front window.
