COAS Conference: Buhari Arrives in Maiduguri Amid Fanfare

President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in Maiduguri on Wednesday on a one-day visit to Borno, where he is expected to declare open the 2018 Chief of Army Staff (CAOS) Annual Conference.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Presidential Jet carrying the President landed at the Nigerian Air Force wing of the Maiduguri International Airport at about 11:15 am amid tight security in the state capital and its environs.

NAN reports that hundreds of people thronged the streets to welcome the President, who arrived amid fanfare.

The President was received by Gov. Kashim Shettima, heads of military formations and other top government officials.

Buhari is expected to visit the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Garbai Elkanemi.

The President’s visit is expected to serve as a morale booster for officers and soldiers in the aftermath of the killing of a number of soldiers at Metele in Northern Borno, by Boko Haram.

Buhari had on Tuesday cancelled his planned five-day private visit to Daura, Katsina State to enable him to be in Maiduguri as a mark of respect for victims of Boko Haram attacks across the battlefields in the Northeast zone.

He had earlier cancelled his official trip to Benin City, Edo, where he was billed to inaugurate the Edo-Azura Power Plant and attend the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference, initially billed to take place in the ancient city.
