‘Buhari’s Refusal to Obey Court Order Killed Channels TV Reporter, DCP’ – Twitter Outrage

There has been outrage in the Nigerian social media following the killing of Precious Owolabi, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving with Channels Television.

The 23-year-old Owolabi died of a gunshot wound he sustained while covering the clash between the police and the Shiite protesters on Monday in Abuja.

The management and staff of Channels Television has expressed sadness over the untimely and unfortunate death of the promising journalist.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in a statement yesterday called on the Nigerian authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the death of Owolabi.

Also, a Deputy Commissioner of Police with the FCT Police Command, Usman Umar was killed during the protest.

On the side of the protesting Shi’ites, at least 11 were reportedly shot dead.

President Buhari in a tweet on Tuesday commiserated with the families of the slain reporter and policeman, describing the Shi’ites protest as violent.

Meanwhile, Nigerians in the social media have reacted to the sad development with an outpour of outrage. Many have blamed the Muhammadu Buhari administration for the killings. Recall that President Buhari has blatantly defied the rule of law disobeying court rulings ordering the release of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
