Ekiti Strike: Workers Divided Over Resumption

In spite of the suspension of the four weeks’ industrial action embarked on to press for the payment of five months’ salaries, the level of compliance by workers was very low on Monday as some of them shunned their respective offices.

When those in the core civil service made some remarkable presence in their offices at the state secretariat and old governor’s office, both in Ado Ekiti, some pupils of primary and secondary schools were seen returning home due to the fact that their teachers were absent from schools.

Early in the morning, rumour had it that teachers were instructing their members to stay at home until salaries were paid.

The labour leaders under the auspices of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and Joint Negotiating Council, on Friday suspended the strike under certain conditions which included immediate payment of January, 2016, salaries and those of February to follow in quick succession.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Ade Adesanmi, has begged the workers not to be disillusioned by the fact that no salary was paid before announcing the resumption, saying the body will renew the strike if Fayose reneges on the pact signed.

More details to come.
