Governor Yahaya Bello Behind Mohammed Audu’s Arrest – Audu Family

Mohammed Audu, a son of the late Governor of Kogi State, Abubakar Audu, is currently in the custody of the Lokoja Police Division after he was arrested and detained purportedly on the orders of Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello.

An Audu family source who did not want to be named confirmed the development to SIGNAL on Wednesday.

The source said the Audu family believes the arrests were influenced by Governor Yahaya Bello as part of the governor’s attempts to muzzle vocal members of the Audu family. “Governor Bello is behind this. And I wonder what he wants after taking everything from us, everything that we laboured for. Why can’t he just leave our family alone in peace”, the source said.

Meanwhile, Governor Bello has denied masterminding the arrests.

Family sources of the late Kogi governor Abubakar Audu told SIGNAL the arrest is a response to the attack on Yahaya Audu, the late governor’s younger brother who represented the Audu family at the Kogi 25th Anniversary ceremony on August 28.

Yahaya had received a posthumous award conferred on the late Mr. Audu and 24 others by the state government at the ceremony.

But on his return to Ogbonicha, the ancestral home of the Audus in Ofu Local Government Area, Yahaya was physically attacked by community members who are still aggrieved with Mr. Bello’s government.

A day after the anniversary ceremony, Mohammed, late Audu’s eldest son, in a statement on behalf of the family, described the award as self-serving.

When contacted, an aide to Governor Bello who did not want to be named said there was no way Governor Bello would have ordered the arrest of Mohammed Audu as the governor was well aware of the implications and the possibility of such a development leading to an outbreak of violence in the state.

“It is not true. This is a lie. Does the governor control the police? How can he order the arrest of Mohammed when he knows this can ignite unnecessary violence in the state? Why did Mohammed come to Lokoja? He lives in Abuja and hardly comes to Lokoja but chose to come around this time and walked straight to the Police station where he was detained”, he said.

Mohammed Audu is fighting through the courts alongside James Faleke to dislodge Bello as Kogi Governor.

Faleke was the running mate to late Audu on the APC ticket in last year’s governorship election. After Audu’s sudden death the day after the poll, the party drafted Mr. Bello in to continue as its candidate in the supplementary election.
