Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have ended their acrimonious divorce battle, reaching a settlement for Heard to receive $7 million and drop her case.
Heard, 30, filed documents on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles stating her intent to finalise the divorce. She had reportedly refused to accept an $8m deal, because Depp would not sign a document admitting domestic violence. He insists he was never abusive.
Depp, 53, is estimated by Forbes magazine to be worth $48 million.
The couple, who were married for 15 months, released a joint statement confirming the news.
“Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love,” they said.
“Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains.
“There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm.
“Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity.”
She does not specify what percentage, and which charity.
Tuesday’s decision draws a line under what had become one of the most talked-about divorces in recent Hollywood history.
On Monday photographs from Heard and Depp’s vitriolic divorce battle were leaked, before being used as evidence by Heard’s team.
They showed a mirror with the words “Starring Billy Bob and Easy Amber” scrawled on it in blue paint and blood.
Heard’s team alleges that Depp flew into a jealous rage – drunk, high on ecstasy – and smashed glasses and windows, severing the tip of his finger. He then wrote with his mauled forefinger on the wall.
The alleged incident took place in Australia in March 2015, while Depp was in the country filming the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film, due out next summer.
Production was halted for what was termed “an on-set accident” for a fortnight as Depp returned to the US for surgery.
On Tuesday Billy Bob Thornton denied having an affair with Heard, describing Depp’s suspicions as “completely false.”
Thornton, who spent the autumn of 2013 filming an adaption of the Martin Amis novel London Fields with Heard, denied that the pair had an affair.
Heard and Depp had met in 2009, while filming The Rum Diaries. But they did not become a couple until 2012, after Depp split from his partner of 14 years, French actress Vanessa Paradis.
Thornton told the gossip website TMZ that Depp’s accusations were “completely false.” Heard has also denied an affair.
Thornton, who was married to Angelina Jolie before tying the knot with his long-time girlfriend Connie Angland, a puppeteer, in October 2014.
Thornton told TMZ he never socialised with Heard off set, other than at a cast dinner. And he added that, even when on the set, he was mostly around members of the crew and was not well acquainted with Heard – their relationship was professional, rather than friendship.
Depp had a brief cameo in the film, but Thornton said they did not cross paths.
Thornton said he has discussed the rumour with his wife, and assured her it was a product of Depp’s imagination.
