Onnoghen Confirmed as Nigeria’s Chief Justice

Justice Walter Onnoghen has been confirmed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria by the Nigeria Senate after occupying the position for more than three months.

Onnoghen was sworn-in by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 10, 2016, after the retirement of the immediate past CJN Justice Mahmud Mohammed. His appointment is in line with the tradition of appointing chief justices based on seniority and in accordance with section 230 subsection (iv) and section 231 subsection (I) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

His confirmation on Wednesday followed his nomination by Nigeria’s acting president, Yemi Osinbajo.

“Following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), I hereby notify you of the appointment of Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria,” Osinbajo said in a letter sent to the Senate.
