Manchester United have signed Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the German club have announced.
Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said the Bundesliga side accepted an undisclosed offer, believed to be in the region of £26m, for the Armenia international to prevent him leaving on a free transfer next summer.
The 27-year-old becomes United’s third major transfer of the summer, following the signings of Sweden stiker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Paris Saint-Germain, and defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal.
Mkhitaryan, who joined Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund in 2013 from Shakhtar Donetsk for £23.5m on a four-year deal, was the Players’ Player of the Year in the Bundesliga last season.
“This transfer was for us a difficult balancing act. Manchester United made us a tremendous offer, and, had we rebuffed it, the player would be available for free in 2017,” Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said.
