Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for stronger patronage of made-in-Nigeria products, saying it is important for the economy and well-being of the country.
He spoke yesterday at the State House in Abuja at a meeting with stakeholders and members of the Implementation Committee on the National Cotton, Textile and Garment Policy.
The committee is proposing a ‘Wear Naija Day’ when public officials and employees of corporate organisations would all wear locally made fabrics.
Osinbajo said patronage of made-in-Nigeria products would contribute to the revival of cotton, textile and garment industries which, according to him, is a goal of the present administration.
The vice president said smuggling of foreign textile materials into the country had to be tackled, adding, “It is up to all of us to see that this particular initiative works, we have talked enough.”
Earlier, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar, said the ministry came up with the Cotton, Textile and Garment Policy to provide a suit of interventions holistically across the value chain, including encouraging local patronage, controlling smuggling, production of improved seedling, cost of energy, cost of funds, training and upgrading and modernisation of infrastructure.
