PDP Young Leaders Forum Decry Exclusion of Young People in PDP Party Politics

Following our 45 days ultimatum to withdraw our support from the party if the warring factions of Sen Ahmed Makarfi and Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff failed to come to a re-conciliatory compromise to resolve the on going leadership tussle in our party and to proceed to organise a convention within 45 days from 20th of Jan 2017,

We have on this backdrop unanimously agreed to sustain our support for the party as a result of recently intensified efforts by our party leaders and stakeholders to resolved the crisis.

Nonetheless, we have noted with utmost dismay the continued disregard and near exclusion of young people in our polity especially in the resolution of current crisis despite the fact that PDP accounts for the highest number of young technocrats with wealth of knowledge yet untapped by the party.

We want to commend the efforts of the Reconciliation Committee ably chaired by H.E. Governor Seriake Dickson.

From the 20th of January, 2017 when we issued the ultimatum, we have carefully and painstakingly listened to and studied the narratives from both factions and have come to the conclusion that the major reason for the quagmire we have found

ourselves in was largely due to the insistence of some party members on playing “god” for personal gratification over and above the good and common interest of all. As young leaders laced with the leadership of our dear country, we are very uncomfortable with this development.

No true Party faithful is comfortable with the downturn in the fortunes of the party. From defeats in Ondo and Edo Gubernatorial elections to the rigging of Imo North Senatorial Elections to the gale of defections from members of the National Assembly elected on the platform of our party to other parties. The signs are glaring that the leadership crisis has greatly undermined the Party’s stability and relevance in national politics.

This is very regrettable and one then wonders what would the fate of our party be in 2019 and beyond? Equally, one also wonders what would be the fate of our young, viable and innovative leaders who have vowed to remain committed and loyal to the PDP.

For purposes of clarifications, and for the avoidance of doubt, we recognize H.E, President Goodluck Jonathan as the leader of the Party given his status as the immediate past President of Nigeria, an Elder and an excellent party man to whom we pledge our unalloyed support and loyalty in his quest to resolving this crisis.

GOVERNORS ON THE PLATFORM OF PDP

We express our dissatisfaction over the role being played by the various Governors elected on the platform of our Party, PDP.  The drowsy effects of their growing dormancy and complacency  is ‘infectiously’ spreading beyond boundaries and further threatening the trust and stability of the party. Under their watch , so many things have gone wrong, and there seem to be no reasonably coordinated direction. This is most worrisome and regrettable. While most party members decry an overbearing influence by Governors, the youth are hoping for a renewed mode of engagement  by our Governors would be driven and embedded in transparency with very high regard for internal democracy and party supremacy .

Our Governors must be more alive to their responsibilities to the Party and realise that they are beneficiaries of the goodwill that the Party still enjoys from Nigerians. They must begin to show credible leadership and focused direction that is devoid of selfishness but weaved to party supremacy in all affairs. We believe strongly in the ideological foundations laid by our founding fathers and that power belongs to the people and we as a Party must conduct our affairs in a manner that truly respects this ideal.

OUR CALL

We are true believers, truly and wholly trusting that “with God all things are possible”. But as the saying goes, “heaven helps those who help themselves”. We hereby call on all PDP Leaders, PDP Elected Officials past and present, PDP Appointees past and present and indeed all party faithful across the country to wake up and see the need to reposition our party for the good of our great nation. There is a great need for all our Party Leaders to come together to form a common and formidable front. Speedily, we must call for a congress to resolve all leadership challenges confronting our dear party. And we expect there should be compromises for this to happen.

We must restate here our earlier stance in our last communique that all convention committees must include a total of 60% of young people with unquestionable integrity who would monitor the electoral process and ensure fairness and equity for all contestants irrespective of their affiliation. This is very necessary as we recognize the need for our party to become great.

There is a need to rise up and stop the looming anarchy and doom stemming from the lack luster leadership of the APC. A party that stops at nothing at violating the human rights of our countrymen and young leaders like Austin Okai, a RENOWNED  PDP POLITICAL ACTIVIST.

Instead of fighting in-house, let’s put our acts together and fight the very people that are silencing, dehumanizing, destroying, and devastating the Nigerian people through inhuman policies and imprudent leadership. And only PDP can do that.

As PDP Young Leaders, we call on our Leaders (no matter their faction) to Swallow their prides, RISE UP and HEARKEN to the growing needs of our people.

For that is the supreme mandate of “Power to the People”.
