President Kenyatta Launches New Political Party Ahead of 2017 Polls

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto launched a new political party on Saturday ahead of next year’s general elections.

The Jubilee party’s launch follows the merger of 11 political parties including President Kenyatta’s National Alliance Party (NAP) and Ruto’s United Republic Party (URP).

Kenya is due to hold elections in August next year.

President Kenyatta will be seeking re-election for a second and final term.

Pomp and ceremony marked the launch of the party attended by thousands of delegates from Jubilee’s affiliate parties.

Kenya is due to hold elections in August next year, President Kenyatta is seeking the support of smaller parties to outwit his main opponent former Prime Minister and opposition leader Raila Odinga who will be making another attempt at the presidency.

Opinion polls have put Kenyatta in the lead, he told his supporters that he plans to make good his campaign pledges.

Together with his deputy and running mate William Ruto, Kenyatta promised a violent free election.

The first time the duo vied for the country’s top jobs – they faced crimes against humanity charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the 2007 Post Election violence.

The cases have since collapsed and Ruto says he hopes to succeed Kenyatta in 2022.
