Real Madrid sacked Julen Lopetegui on Monday evening, his brief reign ended by a 5-1 Clásico humiliation at Barcelona on Sunday. Having agreed to take the job before the World Cup – he was sacked by Spain as a result – Lopetegui lasted only four months in one of football’s most challenging jobs.
Julen Lopetegui has become the coach with the shortest reign in the Florentino Perez era after being sacked following the defeat by Levante on Saturday.
Vanderlei Luxemburgo had held the record for being dismissed quickest having lasted just four months into the season, and 340 days in total as he was appointed during the previous campaign. He was sacked on December 5th, 2005.
Jose Antonio Camacho, 117 days, lasted a shorter time but he left on his own terms.
The numbers of Luxemburgo in 2005/06 were not good, and he only picked up 11 wins in 19 games between LaLiga Santander and the Champions League.
Jose Ramon Lopez Caro, with 178 days, followed the Brazilian.
After his break as president, Perez entrusted Manuel Pellegrini with the job but the Chilean was removed after 358 days, and Jose Mourinho came next, lasting 1,097 days.
Carlo Ancelotti was the next in line and stayed for 698 days, winning the much-coverted tenth Champions League crown before handing over to Rafa Benitez.
The Spaniard spent just 215 days on the bench, leaving the role for Zinedine Zidane to come in and take over for 878 days.
