‘Recession is Not Just a Word’, Adeyanju Schools Kemi Adeosun on Economy

Online opposition activist, Deji Adeyanju of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as insensitive comments made by Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun as regards the economic recession the nation is facing.

Adeosun had said that “recession is just a word” when she reacted to reports released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, NBS on Wednesday.

In a statement released by Deji Adeyanju who is the PDP’s Director of New Media on Thursday, Adeyanju said the Finance Minister was out of line as recession is not just a word, but the reality of many Nigerians.

The statement reads, “Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s statement yesterday was an out of line, insensitive, ridiculous attempt at signalling. Contrary to her belief, “recession” is not just a word. It’s the hostile reality for millions of Nigerians who face increasing difficulty in putting food on the table and meeting basic everyday financial obligations.

“It’s all the more shocking that her comment was made on the day when Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released a report stating that 4,580,602 have lost their jobs since May 29, 2015.

“Her comments fly against the reality of rising food costs, parents withdrawing children from schools due to fee increments, rising transportation costs, rents and other such everyday expenditure.

“Her comments are an insult to suffering Nigerians and make mockery of the pain we bear as a result of the sheer incompetence and  lack of ability of the Muhammadu Buhari administration of which she is an integral part.

“While 4,580,602 may seem like a statistic, these are real people with real responsibilities.”

Adeyanju urged Adeosun to apologise and act like the Finance Minister she is.

‘In a subsequent statement, we will address how her statement about fiscal discipline makes no sense in the face of available data,” the statement concluded.
