BudgIT co-founder Oluseun Onigbinde has been appointed as technical advisor to Nigeria’s minister of state for budget and finance Clem Agba.
The data analyst, who often criticised the current Muhammadu Buhari administration, disclosed this through his Medium account as his Twitter account is now deactivated.
“Friends, I have accepted to take up an advisory role underwritten by an international development agency for an initial period of six months,” Onigbinde said in the post.
BudgIT, which he headed before now, demands transparency, citizen engagement and accountability most especially in public finance from government officials.
The BudgIT co-founder, however, said he remains loyal to his “values of appreciating the right of every citizen to ask the hard questions that public resources must be accounted for and that civic spaces and individual rights must be keenly protected.”
The appointment has generated mixed reactions on Twitter with criticisms and commendation. See some tweets;
Dear @ZShamsuna, the appointment of Seun Onigbinde as your adviser is rather unfortunate. He worked against the re-election of PMB during the last election. Pls see below exerpts of some of his tweets. I suggest you consider another person pls.@Ayourb@jeffphilips1@Zahrahmusa pic.twitter.com/4dy2AcQCfC

I am pleased that Seun Onigbinde has been given an appointment by the Federal Govt. When I tell young people not to be too extreme, they abuse me as “Fencist.” In 2015, you are all in for Buhari. 2019, you are all in against Buhari. Your country is bigger than Buhari. Think am o.

Seun Onigbinde deleted his Twitter account after getting appointment for Buhari’s government.
The same Buhari that we all detest his government.
I am learning a new lesson from this.
“CRITICISE THE GOVT UNTIL THEY APPOINT YOU AND KEEP QUIET”

Seun Onigbinde spent the past few years criticizing Buhari’s inept Govt & holding many other Govt parastatals accountable via @BudgITng. He has been invited to fix what he has always criticized & y’all think he is better off as an arm chair critic? Allow the man to do his job!

Seun Onigbinde spent 5yrs casting the APC govt as useless and irredeemably directionless for Nigeria.
Well guess who just got appointed into APC’s irredeemable govt?Oga even deactivated his twitter account with 1000s of followers to safeguard his plum job from APC SM mobs. ???? pic.twitter.com/JzK6EChk7m

Congrats to Nigeria for snagging my friend Seun Onigbinde as a technical adviser to the Minister of Budget and Planning. I’m know this is a great personal and professional sacrifice for him and grateful he is doing this for our generations unborn. Inspired as always!

I support Seun Onigbinde taking up a role in a govt. ministry where his expertise will be brought to bear. Every Nigerian with the capacity and competence to serve should look to serve. The best activism for me is the one that knows to fix things as it knows what needs fixing!
