‘We Are Not Happy’, Senate Condemns Security Situation In Zamfara, Other States

The Senate has condemned the security situation in the country, especially in Zamfara and other states where attacks recorded recently.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, stated this shortly after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

“We (Senate) are not happy, like most Nigerians, about what is going on in places, most especially places like Zamfara,” he told State House correspondents.

The lawmaker, however, said the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly has taken a position on the matter.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara should do more as the President has provided all that is necessary to tackle the situation to justify the position they hold.

He highlighted funding and the purchase of arms as some of the provisions made, saying, “It is now left for them to justify the positions they hold there in Zamfara State, and in other states of course.”

“Nigerians need to be assured of their safety at all time; that’s the essence of governance as guaranteed by the Constitution,” Senator Omo-Agege.

He also backed the call by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to deploy military personnel at checkpoints in the southern part of the country.

The lawmaker was optimistic that this would provide better security in the region and reduce the rate of crimes such as robbery and kidnapping among others.
