Zamfara Killings: Police Arrest 4 Suspects, Recover 18 More Bodies

The police in Zamfara State have arrested four suspects and recovered 18 more bodies in connection with the Friday killings in Zurmi local government area of the state.

Daily Trust reports that 23 corpses were earlier found in the Zurmi forest in the state. Many of the victims were found with slit throats and gunshot wounds.

Briefing journalists yesterday, the state police commissioner Mr Kenneth Ebrimson said his men recovered 18 more bodies dumped in the River Karen-Idi.

He said all the recovered corpses were evacuated and buried lamenting that the assailants had fled the scene before the police arrived.

Ebrimson said investigation had commenced as a special team was mandated to fish out, arrest and bring to justice the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

He said the four suspects were arrested in their hideout, adding that two guns and three machetes were recovered from them.

“The suspects were arrested after a coordinated bush combing by a team of PMF/ conventional police men led by DPO in Zurmi local government area. While profiling the suspects, they were identified as members of the dreaded and proscribed group of local vigilantes known as ‘Yan Sakai’ in the state who decided to carry out the extra judicial killings.”

“On close inspection there were marks of violence and pellet injuries on the bodies of the deceased persons. The police are partnering with the emirs and other traditional rulers to check their respective domains if they have lost any persons and report to the police,” he added.

In a related development, the police command has also arrested 55 suspected cattle rustlers and bandits across the state. The command further said that 18 cows, four vehicles and three motorcycles were recovered from the suspects.
