In just two years since his inauguration, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has redefined governance in Niger State through a blend of innovation, strategic partnerships, and grassroots engagement. From championing agricultural reforms to spearheading infrastructural development and digital literacy, Bago’s administration has set a new benchmark for leadership at the sub-national level.
One of the most significant milestones of Bago’s tenure is the Niger State Agricultural Mechanization Revolution for Food Security Emergency Initiative. This ambitious project, launched with the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to transform agriculture into a major economic driver for the state. The initiative includes the procurement of 1,000 tractors, combined harvesters, and irrigation systems, alongside the establishment of a 3,000-hectare Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna. These efforts have already resulted in the harvest and warehousing of millions of metric tons of grains by Niger Foods, the state’s agricultural agency.
Furthermore, the state has secured over \$684 million in investments from Chinese firms COVEC and CREC for agro-processing ventures, including sugarcane and ethanol production.
In the realm of infrastructure, Bago’s administration has embarked on extensive road construction projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and stimulating economic growth. Notable projects include the reconstruction of the Minna-Kontagora, Bida-Zungeru, and Lapai-Mokwa roads, as well as the development of township roads in 17 local government areas. These initiatives are expected to generate approximately 3 million direct and indirect jobs, with a focus on employing local vendors and artisans.
Governor Bago has also prioritized education and healthcare, recognizing their pivotal roles in human capital development. His administration has renovated and equipped the IBB Specialist Hospital and General Hospital Minna, constructed and equipped 100 Level 2 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state, and initiated the conversion of the old Shiroro Hotel into a teaching hospital for Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University. Additionally, the Niger State Contributory Health Scheme has been established to provide affordable healthcare services to residents.
Digital literacy has been another cornerstone of Bago’s governance. Under his leadership, the state established the Ministry of Communications Technology and Digital Economy, alongside an Agency for Green Initiatives—the first of its kind at the sub-national level. These efforts have earned Bago the title of “Digital Governor of the Year” at the Nigeria GovTech Conference & Awards 2024, organized by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms.
Security has remained a top priority for Governor Bago. His administration has adopted a community-based approach to address youth restiveness, engaging parents and local leaders to foster responsibility and reduce criminal activities. Additionally, the governor has provided operational vehicles to various security agencies, including the Police, DSS, NSCDC, and NDLEA, to enhance their operational capabilities.
Recognizing the importance of urban planning, Bago’s government has initiated the construction and relocation of the Madalla market to decongest the town and ease traffic congestion. This project is part of a broader urban renewal strategy that includes the review of master plans for Minna and Suleja, as well as the development of rural master plans for other towns.
Governor Bago’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, he was honoured with the “Governor of the Year” award by LEADERSHIP Newspapers, recognizing his outstanding leadership and commitment to the development of Niger State . His administration’s focus on transparency and accountability has also led to the enforcement of the 2022 Revenue Law, the freezing of state accounts to create a unified financial dashboard, and the automation of salary and pension payments.
Looking ahead, Governor Bago remains steadfast in his vision to transform Niger State into a model of sustainable development. With continued investments in agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and digital literacy, the future appears promising for the people of Niger State.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s tenure exemplifies a commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development. Through strategic initiatives and collaborative partnerships, he has set Niger State on a path toward greater prosperity and self-reliance.
