Insecurity: Soyinka Calls for State of Emergency in South-West

Nigerian Literature Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka speaks during an interview with Reuters in his home in the southwest city of Abeokuta July 1, 2014. Nigeria is suffering greater carnage at the hands of Islamist group Boko Haram than it did during a secessionist civil war, yet this has ironically made the country's break-up less likely, oyinka said. Speaking to Reuters at his home surrounded by rainforest near the southwestern city of Abeokuta, Soyinka said the horrors inflicted by the militants had shown Nigerians across the mostly Muslim north and Christian south that sticking together might be the only way to avoid even greater sectarian slaughter. Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, says a state of emergency should be declared in the south-west over insecurity in the region.

Soyinka said this on Thursday while speaking with journalists in Akure, Ondo state.

He said there were many directions of security lapses, adding that measures should be taken accordingly.

“As regard the insecurity in the south-west, there is an emergency. There should be a declaration of security emergency throughout the land and measures taken accordingly,” he said.

“There are many directions of security lapses, you know it here, especially in Ondo state, it is a calamity throughout the whole nation. There is an emergency.”

On his part, Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, eulogised Soyinka, saying he has “taught us to make a meaning of life.”

“This is because they have elevated in our minds, the art of partisan living, as the biggest ideal of social reclamation,” the governor said.

“Indeed, his life at every station has taught us that to make a meaning of life. A man must set forth at dawn and immerse himself at the epicenter of beliefs, struggles and activities which seek to reclaim society and help it attain its spontaneous fullness of being.”
