#KeepFisayoSafe: Fisayo Soyombo Threatened With Arrest for Undercover Investigations

The hashtag #KeepFisayoSafe is currently trending on Twitter Nigeria over concerns that Fisayo Soyombo, the journalist whose undercover stories exposed the depth of corruption in Nigerian police cells and prison may be arrested by the Nigerian authorities.

The first instalment of the three-part investigation by Soyombo, a former editor of The Cable and a contributor to Al Jazeera, detailed how Nigerian policemen “pervert the course of justice in their quest for ill-gotten money”.

Nigerian civil society leaders and activists on Tuesday asked the government to ensure the safety of Soyombo who spent two weeks in detention — five days in a police cell and eight as an inmate in Ikoyi Prison — to track corruption in Nigeria’s criminal justice system, beginning from the moment of arrest by the police to the point of release by the prison.

To experience the workings of the system in its raw state, Soyombo — adopting the pseudonym Ojo Olajumoke — feigned an offence for which he was arrested and detained in police custody, arraigned in court and eventually remanded in prison.

Nigerians on Twitter are using the hashtag #KeepFisayoSafe to demand the protection of the journalist over the revelations of his investigation.

Enough is Enough (EiE) and Chidi Odinkalu are among the citizens demanding the protection of Soyombo.
