The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida, has called for sustained investment in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector to expand network infrastructure and improve the quality of connectivity for existing users.
Maida made the call while delivering the welcome remarks at the maiden edition of the NCC’s Nigeria Digital Connectivity Investment Forum.
According to a statement shared by Johannes Tobi Wojuola, Media Adviser to the EVC, on his X handle, the NCC chief executive said the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 recognises the importance of investment and assigns the Commission the responsibility of facilitating investment in the communications sector.
Maida said connectivity has become increasingly important to Nigeria’s economy, noting that demand for telecommunications services has continued to rise significantly over the years.
He disclosed that Nigerians consumed approximately 1.66 million terabytes of data in July 2026, compared with 1.13 million terabytes recorded in July 2025.
The figures, he said, represented an increase of almost 47 per cent in data consumption within one year.
The NCC boss said the sharp increase in data usage underscored the need for continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure to ensure that networks can accommodate growing demand.
“For Nigeria to keep pace, we must continue to sustain investments both to expand networks and to improve the experience of people already connected,” Maida said.
He stressed that investment in digital connectivity remains critical to supporting Nigeria’s evolving digital economy, as individuals, businesses and public institutions increasingly depend on reliable telecommunications services.
The Nigeria Digital Connectivity Investment Forum was convened by the NCC as a platform to deepen conversations around investment opportunities and the development of Nigeria’s digital connectivity infrastructure.
Maida’s remarks also highlighted the role of the regulatory environment in creating conditions that can attract and sustain investment in the telecommunications sector.
