Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been named the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by the Queen to mark their wedding day.
In the same way Prince William and Kate Middleton were given a royal dukedom on their wedding morning, Harry and Meghan have been given a similar honour.
Their title means the new form of address for both is Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
As when Kate Middleton got married, Meghan does officially become a princess today – but not in her own right.
She will be HRH Princess Henry of Wales.
The previous Duke of Sussex lived at Kensington Palace – where the couple are moving to – and he married for love.
The situation is slightly further complicated by Meghan using her middle name rather than her first name, Rachel.
But just as Duchess Catherine of Cambridge remains Kate Middleton for many of her fans, Meghan’s maiden name is also likely to stick.
The royal couple’s marriage was confirmed in an official document signed by the Queen and released last week.
Her Majesty signed the Instrument of Consent – an elaborate notice of approval, transcribed in calligraphy – in March, paving the way for her “dearly beloved grandson” to marry the former actress.
It said: “Now know ye that we have consented and do by these presents signify our consent to the contracting of matrimony between our most dearly beloved grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales KCVO and Rachel Meghan Markle .”
If Harry failed to get the Queen’s approval to marry, he and his future descendants would be disqualified from succeeding to the Crown.
