Tragedy has struck in Anambra State as many persons have been reported killed by a gunman and at least 18 others wounded while worshipping at St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu located in Ekusigo Local Government Area.
The identity of the attacker and his motive have not been established but security operatives are said to have swung into action to unravel the mystery behind the incident which took place on Sunday.
Whereas, the Anambra State Police Commissioner confirmed 8 people dead and 18 others injured in the attack, The Guardian reports a casualty figure of 47.
The state governor, Willie Obiano, has called for calm when he visited the scene of the attack to commiserate with the parishioners.
Governor Obiano condemned the attack and promised to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.
An eyewitness, who simply identified herself as a choir member, said that the church was dark as there was no light.
She said that the generating set suddenly developed fault; so, the mass proceeded with the congregation using candles.
According to her, the gunman, after the shooting, immediately jumped into a waiting car with a driver.
NAN reports that the attack has left the community in state of shock and mourning.
Security personnel have cordoned off the church, which has since been deserted by worshippers.
