Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has launched a renewed attack on China’s trade policies, accusing Beijing of “raping” the U.S.
Speaking at a rally in Indiana Sunday, the billionaire businessman said China has badly damaged U.S. businesses and workers.
“We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country, and that’s what we’re doing,” he said.
“We’re going to turn it around. And we have the cards, don’t forget it. We’re like the piggy bank that’s being robbed. We have the cards. We have a lot of power with China,” he added.
Trump has repeatedly accused China of currency manipulation, with his campaign manifesto pledging to “cut a better deal with China that helps American businesses and workers compete”.
Trump added that he is not “angry at China,” but with “grossly incompetent” U.S. leaders.
The latest comments are the latest in a long line of inflammatory remarks aimed at China.
Trump also said that, if he becomes the GOP presidential nominee, he’ll raise money for Republican Senate candidates.
He said Sunday in Indiana that competing against republican rivals is “wasting time” he could be spending raising campaign cash.
Trump has frequently boasted that his presidential campaign is self-funded. While Trump has not held traditional fundraisers and lacks a financial team to solicit checks, his campaign website features a large, red “donate” button.
He has raised more than $9.5 million, according to federal records.
May Day arrests
Meanwhile, Seattle police say they arrested nine people during anti-capitalist protests that injured five officers on May Day.
Authorities say eight males and one juvenile female were arrested Sunday evening. The charges included obstruction, assault and property destruction.
Police also said one officer suffered a head laceration after being struck by a rock, one was hit by a Molotv cocktail and hurt but not burned and another officer was bitten. Details on the other two injuries were not immediately available but Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole said there were no serious injuries.
The rowdy evening march followed a peaceful gathering in Seattle earlier by supporters of immigrants and workers.
Demonstrations also took place Sunday in Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland, California.
