In its bid to battle ‘tweetdeckers’, Twitter has reportedly banned multiple accounts that share hundreds of thousands of between them. According to a report by Buzzfeed, the accounts used to conspire as a group to share tweets and force them to go viral. These tweet included their own and those of anyone who would pay.
Tweetdecking is called so because accounts would use services like Tweetdeck to organise the mass sharing.
The behaviour is a direct violation of Twitter’s policies, which state that users cannot use the service for the purpose of spamming. Further, the offending accounts also accept money for tweets, another violation of policy.
Many of the suspended accounts include @Dory, @GirlPosts, @SoDamnTrue, @reiatabie, @commonwhitegiri, @teenagernotes, @finah, @holyfag, and @memeprovide.
Last month, Twitter had banned accounts like Deepfakes, that users a machine learning algorithm to post fake porn videos of celebrities. This violated the platforms terms of service which stated that “you may not post or share intimate photos or videos of someone that were produced or distributed without their consent”.
However, Twitter has noted that it will not ban or block world leaders from using the service. The company said that doing do would hide important information people should be able to see and debate.
