Drama in the Senate as PDP Senator Rescinds His Defection to APC

There was mild drama at the Senate yesterday, when the Senator representing Ebonyi South in the National Assembly, Sonni Ogbuoji, rescinded his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Guardian reports that the lawmaker had raised a point of order, informing lawmakers of his defection from the PDP due to what he called ‘intractable crisis in the party at both state and national level.’

The development led to a rowdy session, as PDP lawmakers protested, while APC senators approached Ogbuoji to leave his seat with PDP lawmakers to join his APC colleagues.

But after some15 minutes of dramatic exchanges, the lawmaker rescinded his decision for further consultation. He said that because of the love they (PDP senators) showed to him, “I have decided to step down my defection for further consultation,” he declared.

As it stands, APC controls 67 seats as against 41 by the PDP. There have been reports of political clashes between the lawmaker and his state governor which has defied interventions of party leaders in the past.
