Kogi State LAWSAN Director Calls for Improved Welfare of Inmates

The Director of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), Kogi State chapter, Mr. Marvelous Edwin, has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the welfare conditions of inmates across correctional centres in the country.

Mr. Edwin, a law student at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, made the call during a humanitarian visit to the Dekina Correctional Facility. He led a delegation of law students from various institutions across the state as part of their commitment to social justice and community engagement.

During the visit, the students engaged with inmates, some of whom shared troubling accounts of alleged miscarriages of justice. Others revealed they remained in custody simply due to an inability to pay fines as low as N30,000.

The visit was met with deep appreciation from the inmates, who described the outreach as a beacon of hope and a reminder that they had not been forgotten.

In his remarks, Comptroller Gambo, an official of the correctional facility, welcomed the student body and emphasized the importance of equipping inmates with vocational and life skills.

He noted that many of the challenges leading to incarceration stemmed from socio-economic hardships that could be better managed with proper education and rehabilitation support.

The visit underscores the growing role of law students in advocacy, community service, and efforts to reform the justice system from the ground up.
