The Federal Government on Monday, said that 55 people allegedly stole a total of N1.34 trillion in Nigeria between the period of 2006 and 2013.

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this in Abuja at a media parley.

This is even as the Minister clarified that only the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, can determine whether former President Goodluck Jonathan will be investigated and prosecuted for alleged corrupt practices or not.

He made it clear that it was not within the power of any other person or agency apart from the EFCC to determine whether Jonathan has case to answer or not.

Alhaji Mohammed explained that out of the stolen funds, fifteen (15) former Governors allegedly stole N146.84 billion; four (4) former Ministers allegedly stole N7 billion and twelve (12) former Public Servants, both at federal and state levels, allegedly stole over N14 billion.

Giving further breakdown, the Minister stated that eight (8) people in the Banking Industry allegedly stole N524 billion; while eleven businessmen allegedly stole N653billion.

Alhaji Mohammed, who did not name the affected persons, however pointed out that the prosecution of the fifty-five persons concerned had already begun.
