The Cross River State police command yesterday arrested ten members of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, few days after the commemoration of Biafra’s anniversary, Leadership newspapers reports.
According to MASSOB’s spokesman in the state, Mr. Okon Archibong, the State Coordinator of the group, Mr. Samuel Okah alongside nine other members were arrested in Ikom and Ogoja local government areas in the state, respectively.
Archibong told Leadership newspapers via a telephone call that “We have not had any other activity outside the May 30th commemoration of Biafra Anniversary Day, but last night the Police from Ikom Division went to the home of our State Coordinator, Samuel Okah and nine other persons and arrested them.”
He said the police did not give any particular reason why the members were arrested; adding that they were suddenly whisked away and later detained in Ikom Police station.
Mr. Archibong disclosed that during the May 30th anniversary, the Cross River members of MASSOB only had a peaceful march in accordance with the directives of the group’s leader, Ralph Uwazurike, who advocated none violence during the occasion.
“I have gone to see them at the Ikom police station this morning and they are in the cell and I asked what offence they committed because during our anniversary march, we did not engage in any confrontation with anybody or group, not even with the police,” he added.
