Vanguard for Probity and Accountability, a civil society organization, has urged the Nigerian Senate to take decisive action over alleged financial discrepancies amounting to N210 trillion in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) audited accounts.
The group’s National Coordinator, Dr. Joel Abba, expressed outrage over the Senate’s recent revelation, stating that the figures, spanning 2017 to 2023, are “mind-boggling” and raise serious concerns about accountability in the oil sector.
“We wonder if a few privileged individuals are feasting on our common patrimony amidst hardship and poverty among a larger population of Nigerians,” Abba said.
The Senate had given NNPCL one week to explain the discrepancies, with lawmakers branding the inconsistencies “unacceptable.” Vanguard for Probity and Accountability backed the Senate’s stance, accusing NNPCL of “crass insensitivity, arrogance, and lack of accountability.”
The group also alleged that the NNPCL Board plans to embark on an extravagant trip to Kigali, Rwanda, on five private jets, costing over N1 billion, which they described as “absurdity taken too far.”
Abba called on the Senate to remain resolute and ensure that everyone involved in the misappropriation of public funds is held accountable.
