The problem of health care in Nigeria and other parts of Africa will not go away unless the political class provides the populace with strong leadership, the immediate former governor of Ondo state, Segun Mimiko said during his presentation at a Public Health African Policy Forum specifically dedicated to Nigeria tagged “Nigerian Health Seminar” at Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs yesterday.
He noted that even the financing of health programs depends on political will, as was witnessed during his tenure with the Abiye program that gave him global recognition.
He praised the efforts of the minister of health, professor Isaac Adewole, also a speaker at the event, for also demonstrating what political will is with his ministry’s initiatives, appealing to the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai and Lanre Tejuoso, chairman senate health committee, to carry the spirit of the gathering to their constituencies so as to maximise it’s impact.
He then charged attendees and the political class not to wait on development partners to take the driving seat for the continent’s healthcare development.
