OP-UNEDITED | The House of Saul – By Sunday Ogidigbo

In 1999, Nigerians of all ages, creeds and tongues rolled out the drums celebrating our return to democracy. Like the people of Israel wanted a king, thinking the best will come out of it politically, economically, socially and spiritually; Nigerians rejoiced when we returned to democracy expecting to reap socio-political and economic dividends that a democratic government ideally should offer. But alas! A dilemma in our democratic process as a nation has posed more doubts than hope for the Nigerian people.

There is nothing wrong with democracy. I believe it is still the best form of government created by man, for the good of man. The problem, however, is when men like Saul are the ones who occupy the seat of power. He ruled in a manner that favoured his longevity in office. He served self, served the interest of his friends and cabinet, and was quick to eliminate perceived political enemies. Similarly, it appears the house of PDP borrowed heavily from Saul’s political ideology. Like Saul, and as widely acknowledged, the PDP did not serve the interest of Nigerians as unto the Lord. Service must be 100 percent selfless. The house of PDP had 16 years to fix all the many problems bedeviling Nigeria. They held power over a period that saw Nigeria make the most from oil than any 16-year window in our 55 years of independence. Like Saul, the PDP squandered our commonwealth and compounded our problems.

You didn’t have to be a prophet to know that like the house of Saul, the house of PDP will crumble like a pack of cards. Any political party that does not serve the interest of the poor and its people with the fear of God, cannot be established. The days ahead will see everyone that enriched themselves with our commonwealth come to shame, reproach and ignominy. Like the house of Saul, they will get weaker and weaker. The party in power should expect an all out war from the house of Saul from all fronts. I expect everyone that ate our yam and shared our national cake to fight dirty, rough and bloody. The reactions, as a result, will only compound their woes for their judgment proceeds from God.

Moreover, the party in power should not assume they occupy the stool of David. The political future of the house of APC will be predicted on the values, interests and spirit that drive the core players of the party. The party in power must have a clear vision for the future of Nigeria. Serious investments must be made into pro-poor and pro-people policies and programmes. The war against corruption must be fought devoid of sentiments and favouritism. Like Martin Luther King Jr said, “We are not satisfied and will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness, like a mighty stream.” We all know that Lady Justice is not only blindfolded, the scale in her hands will not lie. For a false balance is abomination to the Lord; but a just weight is His delight. The house of David was built on a solid foundation of human capital development; this government must invest in education. David was a man who was true to God, to self and his people. This government must be guided by truth, equity and social justice. Mistakes and shortcomings are inevitable, but where and when they are pointed out, they must be corrected.

Nigerians voted out the house of Saul, with the hopes that the party in power would not tow the same path. I hope and pray that this party performs differently by producing the best results we are hoping for. The songs that men, women and children sang to herald this government into office remind me of the songs the women of Israel sang for David ahead of his administration. Will the current King and his party do the works of David or end up another Saul? Only time will tell.
