According to Sani Yerima, a former governor of Zamfara State, President Bola Tinubu may hold talks with bandits in an effort to bring back the nation’s long-term peace and security.
This was said by Yerima after his Monday meeting with President Tinubu at the State House.
“A lot of bandits have been captured and killed, and I’m not saying the government should just keep negotiating forever,” he said. I didn’t—I said to invite them.
”There are repentant individuals in every religion, including Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Because God, who created us, forgives those who repent after committing offenses or sins, it is impossible to argue that Nigerians should not be pardoned if they do so.
”If they change, they should be treated humanely and reintegrated into society before steps are taken to prevent the threat from reoccurring.
“But if they don’t, the government has sufficient authority, resources, military, and security capabilities. With the political will and backing of the government, I am confident in Nigeria’s security forces to handle this situation. So, he said, dialogue is a component of governance.
Remember that Yerima previously urged Tinubu to engage in dialogue with bandits in the same way that the late former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua did with militants in the Niger Delta.
Yerima’s call for dialogue with bandits follows an uptick in the number of random killings and kidnappings of citizens for ransom across the nation.
Even so, some of the bandits terrorizing Nigeria, according to the former governor of Zamfara, are foreigners.
Remember that Zamfara state adopted sharia law 23 years ago during Yerima tenure as governor.
Following a Zamfara Sharia Court decision, Bello Buba Jangebe had his leg amputated under Yerima’s rule in 2000 for stealing a cow.
