Ohimai Amaize Graduates From Columbia University With a Master’s Degree

Nigerian journalist and publisher of SIGNAL, Ohimai Amaize has graduated from Columbia University with a Master’s Degree in journalism.

The journalist, who is currently on exile in the United States, disclosed the development in a tweet.

“Today I graduated from @columbiajourn with a Master’s Degree after receiving a full scholarship from @GlobalCenters  in 2020. It’s been an intense year of academic work. But I am grateful to God for the grace to finish strong”, he tweeted.

“I am also deeply humbled by the support I received from @columbiajourn, @GlobalCenters, family, friends and well wishers too numerous to mention. I salute you all. Thank you!”, he said in a follow-up tweet.

Amaize was admitted to Columbia University in March 2020 for the M.A. Politics program at the institution’s Graduate School of Journalism after receiving the Columbia University Scholarship for Displaced Students (CUSDS).

The Columbia University Scholarship for Displaced Students (CUSDS) is an initiative of Columbia Global Centers. It is the first-ever Columbia-wide scholarship, and the world’s first scholarship of its kind. Amaize was one of 18 students from around the world selected into the inaugural cohort, from over 1,200 applicants.

Amaize fled Nigeria to the United States in June 2019 following threats of arrest for treason by the Muhammadu Buhari regime, over his journalistic work as presenter of Kakaaki Social, Nigeria’s premier primetime social media news program on Africa Independent Television (AIT).

He was granted political asylum in the United States in January 2020.
