The defection of Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno to the All Progressives Congress has sparked speculation that more governors may soon follow suit, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party. With this latest move, the APC now controls 23 states, while the PDP governs 10 states. Other parties, including the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Labour Party, and New Nigeria People’s Party, each control one state.
The spotlight is now on several governors, including Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, and suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who have all been linked to possible defections. Recent meetings and public appearances have fueled these rumors, with President Tinubu expressing optimism about more defections to the APC.
At a recent APC national summit, Tinubu welcomed the defections, stating that they demonstrated the democratic preferences and ambitions of the populace. “I’m glad about what we have, and I’m expecting more to come,” he said. The President’s comments have been seen as an indication that more governors may join the APC in the coming weeks.
The defections have sparked debates between the APC and PDP, with both parties trading barbs over the implications for Nigeria’s democracy. As the political landscape continues to shift, one thing is certain: the APC is eyeing more states, and the PDP is bracing for potential losses.
