Dallas Protest: 5 US Police Officers Shot Dead by Snipers

Four Dallas police officers have been shot dead by sniper fire during protests against the shooting of black men by police, authorities say.

One suspect is in custody after a shootout with police, while a person of interest turned himself in, Dallas police tweeted. Gunfire broke out as demonstrators marched through the city.

The protests were sparked by the deaths of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

Dallas Police Chief, David Brown, said officers had surrounded a car park near El Centro College, where an armed man was firing off rounds with a rifle.

He said the suspect had told negotiators that “the end is coming” and that he was going to attack more officers and had “bombs all over the place.”

A total of 11 officers were shot, and some of the six officers injured are undergoing surgery, authorities said.
It was the deadliest single attack on law enforcement since the 2001 terror attacks, when 72 officers died, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
