Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has assured that in spite of the prevailing challenges besetting the country, God was set to deliver Nigerians out of the predicament.
He, however, warned Nigerians to look forward and resist the temptation of returning the country to the old days of corruption, tribalism, nepotism and other vices, which had held sway before 2015.
Osinbajo, who spoke yesterday during the 2018 Democracy Day inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, said Nigeria would still come out of the current challenges despite all the odds against it.
He noted that Nigeria was on a journey to nation-building, and that God was set to fight for the people.
He said: “God is building a new nation, a nation where there is peace. Let’s go forward and not look back. God will fight for us so that we may enjoy peace. The promises of God are sure and certain. The future is sure.
“I say to you, let us go forward, we shall not go back. The God shall fight for us and we shall hold our peace. God has said he shall build a new nation. We are already heading steadily and surely.”
The Prelate of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Rev. (Dr.) Samuel Kalu Uche, in his sermon, vowed to mobilise millions of Christians nationwide to ensure that no religious bigot, tribalist and wicked man is voted into power in 2019.
Kalu, who stated that presently there was no security in the country and the leaders had failed to create an enabling environment for democracy to thrive, said himself and his members would also work hard against those who may want to manipulate the processes of next year’s general elections.
He also warned the opposition to desist from making frivolous allegations.
“Why are we clamping down opposition and why is the opposition making frivolous statements. We should avoid do-or-die politics and ensure that there is fair-play.
“We can no longer allow impunity to continue in our country. I am not a politician and I don’t belong to any political party but I can influence two million Methodists,” he said.
The cleric, who urged the Federal Government to revisit the 2014 national conference report, also advocated for the setting up of special courts to decide corruption cases with expedition.
