Gunmen ‘Attacked’ Our Witnesses, PDP Tells Presidential Election Tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has informed the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal that some of its witnesses were attacked by armed men.

Mr Livy Uzoukwu, who is counsel to the party and its candidate in the 2019 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, said this at the resumed sitting of the Tribunal on Friday in Abuja.

He said one of the petitioners’ witnesses called him to tell him that some gunmen attacked them on their way to the nation’s capital from Zamfara State.

According to the lawyer, some of the witnesses were injured while others have gone missing.

Consequently, the Tribunal adjourned the trial until Monday, July 15.

Earlier, the petitioners called two witnesses, Husseni Haruna and Zakari Ibrahim, to give their testimonies.

Haruna, who is from Gombe State, claimed that voters were coerced with N1,000 to vote for President Buhari.

When asked if any of those persons have been arrested, he said it was not his business that he reported to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as stipulated by law.

Counsel to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Lateeef Fagbemi, then asked the witness to sign three times on a piece of paper after he insisted that his witness statement was signed by him.

In his testimony, Ibrahim alleged that there were illegal ballot papers signed in favour of the President in Zaki Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

He, however, said he could not remember the exact number of such papers that were signed.
