I’m Innocent, Nigerian Army Framed Me for Killing of Gen. Shuwa – Suspect

I was framed by the military, declared a 35-year-old suspected killer of General Mamam Shuwa, Mohammed Sani Nafiu, who claimed he knew nothing about the assassination of the civil war hero, The Sun reports.

Nafiu  who spoke to newsmen on Tuesday in Kano, North-West, when he was paraded by military said he was innocent of the crime.

The high profile suspect who spoke in Hausa said “I don’t know anything about General Shuwa’s death,” adding “I was arrested from my home to the detention centre, and they are trying to frame me. I must make myself clear, I have no hand in General Shuwa’s death”.

Nafiu was arrested by the military at Hotoro General area of Kano municipal and a cell phone and N300 were recovered from him.

But a senior military officer told journalists shortly after the brief encounter with the suspects to disregard his stand, saying there is no iota of truth in the suspect’s claim

The officer who does not want his name in print said that the “suspects is a pathological liar, what we know of him was different from the picture he tried to paint before the world.”

According to him “immediately after General Shuwa was martyr, this suspect relocated from his country home and his arrest was a product of sustained intelligence operation”.

General Shuwa, veteran and former member of the Supreme Military Council, was gunned down in his house at Gwange in Maiduguri along with his guest, shortly before the Juma’at prayer  in November 2012.

Forty other people were said to have been killed in a bloodbath in another part of Maiduguri on Thursday night.
