LEADERSHIP Newspaper has named Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and senator representing Bayelsa West, its Politician of the Year 2026.
The newspaper cited his role in the emergence of a new opposition platform, his contribution to the defence of multi-party democracy, his record in government and his continued presence in national politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The honour forms part of LEADERSHIP’s annual awards series. This year, the newspaper also named media entrepreneur Prince Nduka Obaigbena and industrialist Abdul Samad Rabiu as Persons of the Year. In its citation, LEADERSHIP described Dickson’s work in 2026 as “truly remarkable” in Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.
The paper presented the former Bayelsa State governor as a politician of integrity whose career has spanned the executive and the legislature. It said the founding and leadership of the NDC had, in a short time, placed him at the centre of opposition realignment after a prolonged crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Dickson was born on 28 January 1966 in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. He studied law at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1993 after attending the Nigerian Law School.
He served as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Bayelsa State from 2006 to 2007 before winning election to the House of Representatives in 2007 for the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency. In the House, he chaired the Committee on Justice and took part in debates on governance, institutional reform and democratic institutions.
In 2012, he was elected Governor of Bayelsa State and served two terms until 2020. LEADERSHIP noted that his administration pursued a Restoration Agenda built around infrastructure, education, healthcare, institutional reform and service delivery, with particular attention to the connectivity challenges of a largely riverine state.
After leaving Government House, Dickson returned to the National Assembly as senator for Bayelsa West. The newspaper said experience across the House of Representatives, the governorship and the Senate had given him a broad view of democratic leadership, public policy and the politics of the Niger Delta and the federation.
LEADERSHIP identified his defining political moment in 2026 as the founding and leadership of the NDC. It said his decision to leave a major party and take responsibility for building a new platform marked a significant realignment of opposition politics ahead of 2027.
The paper argued that building such a movement required more than public recognition. It demanded organisation, stakeholder management, internal coordination and the capacity to inspire confidence among politicians and voters. It said Dickson’s decades in party work, elections and government had prepared him for that role, and that his emergence as National Leader had made him a central figure as parties reposition and as public demand for a credible alternative remains a live issue in national debate.
The citation also stressed continuity. From early legal practice and state office, through the House of Representatives, eight years as governor, a return to the Senate and now leadership of a new party, Dickson has, in LEADERSHIP’s account, remained engaged in the democratic process and grown from a Niger Delta figure into a national one.
The newspaper said he was a worthy recipient of the Politician of the Year 2026 award for four related reasons: his role in the emergence and leadership of the NDC; his contribution to political realignment in 2026; his governance record in Bayelsa State; and his continued service at the national level.
LEADERSHIP contrasted his present relevance with politicians whose standing rests mainly on holding office. In 2026, it said, Dickson’s standing was defined by a willingness to help shape a new political direction.
The award is a media honour, not a statutory prize. It comes as the NDC continues to organise toward 2027, with Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso widely identified with the party’s national ticket, and as other publications and civic groups have in recent months also recognised Dickson for legislative and democratic work.
LEADERSHIP’s choice places a serving senator and opposition national leader among the figures it judges to have most shaped Nigerian politics in the past year.
