Obasanjo Introduced Corruption, Buhari Should Probe Him – Senator Waku

Senator Joseph K. N. Waku on Tuesday told President Muhammadu Buhari that, he cannot succeed in the fight against corruption, if he fails to probe former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Leadership reports.

Senator Waku who spoke to journalists in Kaduna during the Annual General Assembly of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) stated categorically that, corruption in Nigeria was introduced by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and should not be spared.

According to Waku, “Nobody has come to me to report a government functionary in corrupt practices, so I cannot make much comment on that. Look, I am 70-year-old now and I have been in this game for more than 50 years. Therefore there is no way I can just look at some totality of  what people are saying about corruption but if I have my way, and it has been reported to me; if I have a way of investigating mechanism and I know that this accusation is real obviously.

“I have access to authority, I have access to Mr President. I told Mr President that this corruption probe of past regime, if you don’t probe Obasanjo, then you have not done anything yet. Corruption in Nigeria was introduced by Obasanjo.

“Buhari is probing people from PDP because they battered this economy for the past 16 years. They have the opportunity to do well but they failed. I will not deny the fact that I was part of PDP. I left PDP for a minority party as a matter of principle. By the time we brought PDP in a party, it was not “People Destroying Nigeria”. We found out that the party was no longer working as it was founded and that is why some of us that left did so,” he said.

On the political structure of the country, Senator Waku said, presidential system of government too expensive and Nigeria was not ripe for it.

“Let’s say okay, if somebody from the North is the president or somebody should be vice president from the south or somebody from the South-south has to be this or that so that you bring people together. We have a culture that takes care of segment which by implication promoting unnecessary expenses and the Presidential system of government is very expensive and Nigeria is not ripe for that system.

“I am suggesting that we can still practice presidential system of government in Nigeria, but we have to minimize our culture to suit our own reality,” he said.

Giving his assessment of President Muhammadu Buhari administration, he said, if Buhari fails to do what he is supposed to do, Nigerians will be disappointed in him and the party that brought him to power may no longer get vote from Nigerians.

“This government inherited already battered economy as a political party. But I made bold to say to those who cares to know that APC did not win that election but Buhari did. Therefore if Nigerians are tired of Buhari it is dangerous because APC as a political party did not by Buhari won election take it or leave it.

“So, if Buhari fails to do what he suppose to do, first, Nigerians will be disappointed in him. Two, the party that brought him to power may no longer get vote from Nigerians. But again, Nigerians must also be mindful of the fact that Buhari wants to establish a system that will continue to remain after him.  He knows this country so thorough”.
