Kingsley Kanayo
The latest rapper to go viral on Twitter is…Pope Francis.
Twitter users started composing rap lyrics for the pontiff through the hashtag #PopeBars, which was inspired by photos that show Pope Francis in prime rapper stance — mic in one hand, gesturing with the other, surrounded by a “cypher” of very attentive African clergy members waiting their turn — and encouraged users to make their own lyrics and memes.
As of Monday afternoon the hashtag was trending with more than 60,000 tweets. Even best-selling author and columnist Ta-Nehisi Coates and Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway musical Hamilton, joined in on the game with a few genius lyrics of their own.

“It was all a dream, I used to read John 3:16. Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit all up in my limousine.” #PopeBars pic.twitter.com/kNMDkeZrDc — Israel, Boy Wonder (@Israeldoeslife) November 30, 2015
“I murder these bars like Cain did to Abel. Better call me Charlie cause I’m surrounded by angels” #PopeBarspic.twitter.com/vd2sOi7Mzi

“God had a mixtape he named it the Bible, Jesus had a rap crew called it the disciples” #PopeBars pic.twitter.com/s9bu5PfHci

Incidentally, Pope Francis has released a pop rock album called Wake Up! But so far it has gotten mixed reviews, so who knows whether #PopeBars will make an inspiration for a new rap album.
