Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Donald Trump on winning the U.S. presidential election in one of the most shocking election upsets in modern American history.

The Russian leader “has expressed confidence that the dialogue between Moscow and Washington, in keeping with each other’s views, meets the interests of both Russia and the US,” according to Russia Today.

Trump showed a conciliatory tone toward Putin during his election campaign, and his foreign policy ignited frequent criticism that he was too close to Russia generally and was Putin’s preferred candidate.
