SIGNAL POLL | Nuclear Energy: Buhari’s Trip to US, a Waste of Resources

Nigerians have described President Buhari’s trip to Washington DC for the 4th Nuclear Security Summit where his handlers say he is expected to advocate for Nigeria’s development of nuclear energy, as a waste of resources.

51% of respondents in a Twitter opinion poll conducted by SIGNAL on Friday said the trip was a waste of resources, another 26% were of the view that he should fix the power supply crisis first, while a minority 23% said the move was in order.

According to presidential spokesman Femi Adesina, “At plenary sessions of the summit which is dedicated to reinforcing international commitment to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, President Buhari has outlined that he will insist that while Nigeria will continue to sustain that commitment, world powers must respect the right of other countries to the peaceful use of nuclear energy for development purposes.

“Buhari plans to reaffirm Nigeria’s stance that international efforts to ensure greater security of nuclear materials should maintain a balance between nuclear non-proliferation obligations and the indisputable right of Nigeria and other countries to harness nuclear energy and technology for socio-economic development.”

But as shown clearly by the poll results, most Nigerians see it as a misplacement of priorities and waste of resources as the Nigeria is currently grappling with the challenge of fuel scarcity and declining electricity supply.
