Hundreds of pupils of Idogbo Secondary School, Idogbo in Ikpoba-Okha council of Edo State went on rampage yesterday, destroying the institution’s property, vandalising the principal’s office and setting a section of the school ablaze.
Reports gathered in Benin that the pupils resorted to violence when one of them had an altercation with one of the policemen drafted to the school to maintain law and order.
They overpowered the policeman and stripped him of his uniform.
The school regularly invites policemen and vigilantes to the school, especially during end-of-term examinations, to avoid any breakdown of law and order.
Prior to the rampage, one of the invited policemen was reportedly moving round the school premises, but some of the students became uncomfortable and suddenly started chasing him about.
He was rescued by his colleagues, which irked the pupils, who began to destroy the school property. Staff fled for safety. The policemen and vigilantes were later joined by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) who eventually arrested 49 of the rampaging pupils. Police spokesman, Bello Kontongs, confirmed the incident.
