Arsenal Defender Mathieu Debuchy Confirms Aston Villa Offer

Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy has confirmed to L’Equipe that he is currently weighing up an offer to joinAston Villa after growing frustrated with his lack of first-team action with the Gunners.

Debuchy, 30, suffered a long-term shoulder injury midway through last season and subsequently lost his place at right-back to the emerging Hector Bellerin, who has started all but two Premier League games for Arsene Wenger’s side this term.

The France international has featured just seven times so far this campaign as a result and stresses that he needs to leave the club in the winter transfer window if he wants to secure a place in Didier Deschamps’ Euro 2016 squad.

“Whatever happens, even if it is to return [to Arsenal] this summer and then start again, I have to go this winter. I cannot stay at Arsenal,” Debuchy told L’Equipe. “As the weeks go by, we get closer to the Euros. I have to play to try to return as soon as March for the Netherlands and Russia friendlies.

“I clearly lost six months. I would have preferred to leave last summer but the coach [Arsene Wenger] told me that I would have my chance. Ultimately, it was not the case.”

Debuchy has been strongly linked with a loan move to Villa recently after manager Remi Garde admitted earlier this month that he would be interested in signing his fellow Frenchman to help boost his side’s slim survival hopes [h/t Birmingham Mail].

The full-back admits that a January switch to the Midlands is a possibility, but with the club struggling at the foot of the Premier League, he is taking his time to asses other options as well.

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are also chasing his signature currently, and playing in Germany would be an attractive proposition for the former Newcastle United man.

However, has also believes that Villa could offer him a “great challenge”, adding: “It’s true, they [Villa] are among the teams seeking me. I’m currently studying everything but it’s not a possibility I have excluded.
