We Borrowed N600 Billion to Pay Salaries – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday disclosed that the federal government has had to borrow to the tune of N600 billion annually to pay salaries in view of the dwindling revenue occasioned by the fall of oil price.

President Buhari said his administration inherited a country that had been robbed to the last coffers, hence leaving an ailing economy that must be nurtured and allowed to stabilise with time.

According to him, his administration borrowed an average N600 billion yearly to augment and pay salaries of workers.

President Buhari, who was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Engr. David Babachir Lawal at the ECWA 63rd General Church Council (GCC) in Jos yesterday, assured Nigerians that, given the desired cooperation and support, Nigeria would be revived within the shortest time possible.

He called on the church to join hands with the government in its fight against corruption by preaching the gospel that would make people shun corrupt tendencies and embrace honesty, transparency and accountability.

He commended the immense contribution of ECWA to the development of the country, particularly in assisting the church in prayers which led to a free and fair election, as well as the smooth transition process last year.

“By the grace of the Almighty God, I stand here before you as the representative of the duly elected President of Nigeria, by virtue of the transparent electoral process,” the SGF said.
