Buhari Appoints Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu INEC Chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Professor Mahmoud Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

A meeting of the Council of State which held in Abuja on Wednesday ratified the appointment.

His appointment is however subject to the approval of the Nigerian Senate.

Yakubu, a professor of political history and international studies, was Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. He is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism.

Meanwhile, Amina Bala Zakari who was until Yakubu’s appointment acting Chair of INEC is now being re-assigned as INEC Commissioner in charge of the North-West.
