INEC To Hold Adamawa Governorship Supplementary Election On Thursday

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Thursday, March 28, 2019, to conduct the governorship supplementary election in Adamawa State.

The electoral body announced this on Tuesday via its verified Twitter handle.

It explained that the exercise would be conducted in 14 local government areas of the state, with a total of 40,988 registered voters.

According to INEC, the electorate will go to 44 polling units to take part in the exercise which will take place between 8 am and 2pm in 29 Registration Areas.

INEC fixed the date shortly after an Adamawa State High Court has vacated an order restraining it from conducting the governorship supplementary election in 44 polling units in the state.

The exercise failed to hold in Adamawa as a result of a suit filed against INEC by the governorship candidate of the Movement for Restoration and Defence for Democracy (MRDD), Mustafa Shaba.

Shaba had sued the electoral body over the omission of his party’s logo on the electoral materials used in the March 9 governorship election.

Following the ruling of the court on the matter, INEC said it would announce the date for the governorship supplementary election before the close of work.

On March 11, the Returning Officer for the governorship election, Professor Andrew Haruna, declared the poll inconclusive while announcing the results at the collation centre in Yola, the state capital.

He explained that the margin of the lead of 32,476 between the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) was less than the 40,988 votes that were cancelled.

INEC had, thereafter, announced that it would conduct supplementary elections in 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on March 23.

Although that of the state constituency held in Mayo Belwa and Hong Local Government Areas of Adamawa, the governorship supplementary poll failed to hold as a result of the previous court order.
