Manuel Pellegrini Defends Record as Manchester City Manager

Manuel Pellegrini says he has been the most successful manager in the Premier League during his three years in charge of Manchester City.

City need a point from his final match at Swansea City on Sunday to secure a top-four finish and Champions League football for his successor, Pep Guardiola, next season.

Pellegrini’s side have failed to mount a title challenge this season but the Chilean has defended his time at the Etihad, and says no other manager has been as successful or entertaining.

City have won the Premier League once and Capital One Cup twice during Pellegrini’s time in charge, while they reached the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time in their history this season having never gone further than the round of 16 before.

He told a news conference: “I always think we can do it better, but the important thing is to compare yourself with all the other teams. If we make a summary of the three seasons I was in charge here, we were the team that had more points.

“We were the team that had better performances as a manager, we were the team that in the three seasons we always scored the most goals.

“The only thing that we couldn’t be the best at is our defence, that was Chelsea, they conceded just four fewer goals than our team. The goal difference is huge between us and all the other teams.”

The statistics back up Pellegrini’s belief that City have been the best team over his time in charge. His side have scored 255 goals since he took charge — 40 more than second-best Liverpool and have collected 230 points in his time — eight more points than nearest rivals Arsenal.

No other manager has won three trophies over the past three years while fourth place would mean City have the best average finish of any Premier League side.

And Pellegrini says his time at City has been marked by an attacking brand of football — particularly in his first season when City scored 102 goals on their way to the tile.

He added: “During the three seasons, the fans always tell me that they enjoy our games. Of course, it’s impossible to play all the games well, but I think the amount of goals we scored in the three seasons, I think it’s 50 or 60 more [sic] than any other team, so I think that’s an entertaining team, and a team that wins titles and one that has progressed in the Champions League.

“It’s about a style, and for me it’s important to be the highest-scoring team for three seasons, to be always in the Champions League and to win three titles.”
