The Nigerian government will amend its public procurement legislation to promote products that are made in Nigeria.
Bukola Saraki, president of the country’s Senate (pictured), said the government will change the wording of one section of its procurement law relating to the favouring of goods and services made in Nigeria, replacing the word “may” with “shall”.
Currently section 34 of the Public Procurement Act 2007 reads: “Procuring entities may grant a margin of preference to domestic contractors, and suppliers for goods manufactured in Nigeria.”
Speaking at the Made in Aba trade fair in Abuja, Saraki said: “If you put ‘may’ in any legal document, it is as good as doing nothing. That ‘may’ will become ‘shall’.”
“Let us start this journey to keep goods made in Nigeria within our economy,” he added.
